2004 Trans Am Nationals

Toni recently found this 1976 Trans Am project car.  It turned out to be Herb Adams' VSE Fire Am prototype.
This Trans Am, originally white, was painted black, later fitted with a '77 nose and hood to demonstrate with the other Fire Ams in 1977 and '78.  The Fire Am project was targeted at SCCA racers as an "arrive and drive" race car.  As a prototype this Fire Am has seen lots of track time.  It still contains the racing seat shown in the magazine articles of the late '70s.
This manual transmission car was the test bed for many modifications that lead to the original WS6 suspension package, first offered in 1978.
The second generation Firebird is notoriously nose heavy.  Some of the modifications lowered the center of gravity and moved weight distribution closer to 50 / 50 to enhance the handling.  These include having the sub frame raised and welded to the uni-body, sub frame to cowl connecting bars, trunk mounted battery and enormous trailer hitch receiver bar.
This picture shows the sub frame to cowl connecting bars, designed by VSE to bolt in.  This one however cracked and was welded back together.
