Road Trip to Texas Trans Ams 2004

That evening Dan and I took Gary to a bar called “Bellbottoms” in Hurst (a town named after a shifter…only in Texas…hey, is there a Mr. Gasket, TX?). We left at midnight to grab an early breakfast at a nearby “W’awful House”.

Before leaving the Dallas area Dan wanted to see where JFK was assassinated. I figured I’d give him the grand tour and drove to the Oak Cliff area to show him the movie theatre where Oswald was captured, and the rooming house he shared with his wife Marina. We then drove to downtown Dallas to see Dealey Plaza and the Texas School Book Depository, and the Dallas City Jail where Oswald was killed by Jack Ruby. The usual assassination freaks and conspiracy weirdos were hanging around Dealey Plaza and we told them all to get lost.

I also showed Dan the Magnolia Oil Co. Building. At the time of its completion in 1922 it was the tallest building (422’) between Chicago and Los Angeles, and was topped by a 50’ tall red neon winged horse that rotated on a platform. The horse was visible at night from as far away as 20 miles and served as a beacon for travelers. Magnolia become Mobil in the 1930s, hence the red horse.

We spent Sunday night at my dad’s house in Little Rock, where his wife Betty baked us an excellent casserole. It was an excellent end to an excellent adventure, and Dan said he’s going to do the trip back to TXTA in 2005. Hell yeah!
