Following our trip back in the 1960s
"time capsule" that is the Belvedere Motel, we had a great home-style breakfast at
Shemwell's Barbecue in historic downtown Cairo. You know the food is going to be good when the cook is smoking at the grill. It’s just too bad we wouldn’t be around for lunch. With the tunes of Def Leopard and Styx we cleared the boot heel of Missouri, eastern Arkansas and were in Memphis TN before lunchtime.
We took the monorail over to Mud Island and toured the museum of the Mississippi. It featured a life size walk through model of a
paddle wheel riverboat and an
ironclad gunboat from the civil war. Outside there is a
miniature topographical replica of the river that runs most of the length of the island. Mud Island is also the home of
"Memphis Belle", the B-17 bomber from WW II.
Currently it was off display being restored. They couldn’t tell us how long it would take or how much it would cost to restore that vehicle either. Does that sound familiar? We suspect 18 to 24 months.
As we crossed the Arkansas - Texas state line the
sun was setting on a perfect summer road trip. Except
for the time I stepped on gum in the parking lot, and David got cheese on his
hamburger. When that's the worst part of the trip, you know you're
doing pretty good.
So far, every year we have attended, the Trans Am Nationals has drawn over 500 entrants. Hands down the best show for the service we offer to the second-generation firebird hobby. No other show we have attended draws our target market of show entrants, racers, shoppers and spectators like this Dayton show. In our opinion
four other shows combined don’t come close to equaling the impact of this one weekend, and we had the best time doing it.
Oh, and if you see Alex, get him a hot dog, would ya?
