Saturday 9:56am; we returned to the show shortly after Gary, our Webmaster, arrived. He drove, although not in a Pontiac, but that too is another story. Again we hit the swap meet and immediately ran into some of our customers, clients, business associates, fans and groupies. Yes, it seems that Texas Trans Am even has groupies! We spent all day between the swap meet and the show. If you have never been, you have got to go! Otherwise it’s hard to imagine over 500 really nice cars, from 1967 to 2002. Most of the people that own them are proud of their cars and love to show them.
Saturday 5:28 pm: We left for Tipp City, about 4 miles north of Dayton. Each Saturday evening of the Trans Am Nationals they host a “Cruise In” just for Firebirds. Tipp City has is a neat little downtown area that remains much the way it would have looked around the early 1900’s. They block off the main street and about 4 side streets on the north and south side. If you arrive in a firebird they lift the barricade and let you through, if not you can just go around. There were around 300 really nice Firebirds from all years DRIVEN and parked there. What a sight! The have a D.J. playing tunes, little shops and restaurants and everything. Gary, our Webmaster, got pictures of some nice young ladies with their Firebirds for
PontiacChick.com. After one of the girls gave him so much hassle, we nicknamed him pontiacperv.com. Shortly before sundown we ran into
the guys from Hogs Head Racing and joked for a while about the merits of Firebird recycling. Then we piled back into Gary’s car and “Ruby TDS” to head back to Columbus. Again I’m telling you if you ever get the invitation to stay at “Casa Manz” I highly recommend it. Kara, Alex’s wife, fixed awesome meals, and kept the place spotless. Their daughter was very sweet and seems to have lots of patience with daddy’s hobby.
Sunday 6:40am: Gary’s car (loaded with spoilers, splash pans, hood shakers, formula wheel, assorted buttons and knobs and a nice engine turned dash bezel) pulled out of the driveway for his 1084-mile return trip. After fixing us all a good breakfast, Alex took us back to the airport to see us off. We promised to come back next year and are looking forward to it.
Sunday 1:52pm: We touched down at DFW Int’l. Shortly down the Highway from the
airport grounds the red and yellow sign of Chicken Express greeted us. Home at last.
It was a whirlwind weekend that turned out absolutely perfect! I must thank my friends, “Just Plain Ol’ Joe” for making our flight possible, “Webmaster“ Gary for carrying all our treasures back, the “Manz Family Bed & Breakfast” for their genuine hospitality during our stay, and my son, for going with me to keep me amused. He did show me up on Friday night, by meeting a girlfriend, one of Alex’s neighbor’s kids. Man, that was fast. I guess it’s time to sit him down for that big talk a single father has with his teenage son. Yeah, you know the one. No not that one! The one where the son explains to the dad the secret to his success with women. Yeah, that one. I dread it.
